Leeds boss Thomas Christiansen has said that he told goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald he “expected more” playing time from him after he dropped him for the game against Reading.
Summer signing Wiedwald had been the number one between the sticks for the Whites until now, starting all 11 of the Championship side games until last weekend.
However, after some poor performances, Christiansen took the decision to rest him with fellow summer signing, 35-year-old Andy Lonergan.
In his pre-match press conference ahead of this Saturday’s game with Bristol City, Leeds boss revealed what he said to Wiedwald.
“I had my speak with him and told him that I expected more from him,” said Christiansen, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post.
“There has been a good reaction from him. He understood the reason that I gave him.”
It is expected that Lonergan will keep his place for the game against Bristol City on Saturday.
It’s always tough for a keeper when he gets dropped – their position is normally certain unless they get injured. Thomas Christensen has said that the performance he got from his new keeper was good on being told the news, but Lonergan should start between the sticks against Bristol City. Felix Wiedwald will have to bide his time and hope to get a second chance, but it looks like his number one slot is about to be challenge.
