A hat-trick from Cristiano Ronaldo helped Real Madrid to get an easy win against Real Sociedad by 5-2 at Santiago Bernabeu last Saturday. This win seemed like the perfect way to go for the Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain for the Los Blancos.
The defending European champions dominated the game from the very beginning with an aggressive style of play. Lucas Vazquez got the opener, then Ronaldo fired two more goals with Toni Kroos also adding one in just the first half.
The second half was far better for Real Sociedad as they managed to score two goals thanks to the efforts of Jon Bautista and Asier Illarramendi. However, with one more goal from Ronaldo, there was no chance of a comeback for Real Sociedad.
The next team to visit Santiago Bernabeu will be PSG for the first leg of the Champions League’s round of 16. With Real already out of the Copa del Rey and almost no chance of catching up with the league leaders Barcelona, the Champions League is their only opportunity for silverware in a season that has been quite dismal so far.
For this match against Real Sociedad, Real’s boss Zinedine Zidane was taking no chances as he had named a strong playing squad with back-ups from Bale, Isco and Casemiro on the bench. The last match against Levante had been a huge disappointment for Zidane’s side as a late equaliser from Levante had resulted in a draw for Los Blancos. However, this time Real were leaving no stones unturned to win this match.
They were aggressive from the very beginning as the first goal came in just 47 seconds of the play. Throughout the first half, they remained very strong and gave no opportunity to the opposite side to threaten their goalkeeper Keylor Navas. With four goals already in the first half, Real had decided the fate of the game.
However, Real Sociedad showed some attacking intent in the next half. Jon Bautista scored a goal in the 74th minute with one more goal coming from Illarramendi as well but by then a turn-around was impossible as Ronaldo had just scored his third goal.
This win must come as a huge relief for Real Madrid before their big match against PSG in the Champions League. The Los Blancos boss has been under huge pressure after the humiliating defeat against Leganes and then the draw against Levante. Many are already speculating about his future at Real if they lose the match against PSG. Robert Pires, Zidane’s former colleague, said in an interview that it would be difficult for Zidane to keep his job in the post-Champions League elimination scenario.
“He knows how things are,” Pires said. “If Madrid are eliminated, it will be difficult for him to keep his job.”
While the Former Real Madrid midfielder Guti has supported Zidane to continue as the coach of Real Madrid even if they lose against PSG saying,
“We must not forget what he has done. Zidane must continue.”
