Middlesbrough were beaten 2-1 by Leeds United in Garry Monk‘s first return to Elland Road since he left in the summer.
Garry Monk has told Middlesbrough’s official website that he felt that the Championship side deserved something from their clash with Leeds at Elland Road on Sunday.
Monk was making his first return to the club where he spent last season as manager following his surprising summer exit that culminated in his ending up at the Riverside Stadium while Thomas Christiansen was appointed to succeed him.
And his former side ruined his return as Christiansen’s side ran out 2-1 winners in a scintillating game that had plenty of twists and turns before the referee blew the final whistle.
At the end of the game, Monk admitted that he thought that his side had been unlucky to come away from Leeds with no points as he felt that they did enough to deny the Whites the win.

“We’re disappointed to lose, I think we deserved more today,” he told the club’s official website.
“I think it’s the fine margins because we started both halves reasonably well and the goals came straight after.”
Unsurprisingly, there will undoubtedly be a number of Leeds fans who will disagree with Monk’s assessment of the clash, especially as the penalty that allowed Monk’s side to get back into the game was controversial to say the least.
Monk’s men did showed a brilliant performance throughout the game, but his former side showed that clinical edge and would have certainly had grounds to complain had Middlesbrough found a late equaliser given that few could argue that the incident that culminated Britt Assombalonga to halve the deficit from 12 yards should have resulted in a penalty for the visitors.
