Will Arsenal Escape Bayern Munich This Time ?

Arsenal, Premier League, UEFA Champions League Comments Off 15

Arsenal may not have escaped their nemesis in the Champions League after all and Arsene Wenger may probably be racking his head at the moment.

The Gunners have always been eliminated in the last 16 of the European competition since 2009/2010 when they were defeated by Barcelona. And they have been handed a tough draw again this season. It was believed they would escape European heavyweights after topping their group, their first since 2012.

Home and away wins against Ludogorets Razgard and FC Basel, and a pair of draw against PSG put them on top of their group with 14 points, their highest haul since 2005. But they will now face German Champion Bayern Munich in the second round stage, for the third time in five years.

The last 16 stage has always been a nightmare for the club. In the last six season they have been eliminated at this stage by Bayern Munich and Barcelona twice each as well as AC Milan and Monaco.

The London club have failed to find a way past the Bundesliga club in all their three meetings at the Knock-out stages. Wenger’s men have won just three of their 10 meetings with Allianz Arena outfits in the Champions League.

But Arsenal have the chance of contesting the second leg of their second round stage at home for the first time since 2012 after winning their group.

For the two other English sides, Leicester City will face Spanish club Sevilla while Man City have been paired with French giants Monaco.

The first legs will be played on February 14, 15, 21 and 22 while the second legs will come up on March 7, 8, 14, and 15.
