Two teams who will challenge for the Premier League title – according to Gary Neville

Keep calm as the Premier League will be back to action in just 25 days.

It feels like ages ago since former Chelsea man John Terry and Gary Cahill lifted the trophy at Stamford Bridge back in May after the Blues effectively ran away with the league during the 2016/17 season.

They eventually finished seven points clear of Tottenham in second but there is a reason no team has successfully defended the title since 2009.

All of the top six clubs from last season will have aspirations of mounting a challenge this time around and are currently busy trying to strengthen their squad before the new season.

And even though there is still plenty of time for clubs to make some major acquisitions before the transfer windows shuts in September, Gary Neville has stuck his neck out by making an early title prediction.

Unsurprisingly, the former Manchester United defender has backed his old aide to improve on their sixth-placed finish but expects their local rivals to be in contention also.

“I said last season that the title would come to Manchester – and I was wrong – but I think this year it will,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“I think Chelsea will dip a little bit. Not in a negative way, but just having the Champions League will bring different challenges. I think Tottenham will be strong, but I feel that either United or City will win it, but I’m not sure who!

“I say it every year, whoever recruits best, wins the league. Chelsea getting N’Golo Kante was a masterstroke and Eden Hazard and Diego Costa came back to form.

“All the clubs are going for the same players, they’re all expensive and controlled by agents.

“So, whoever has the best relationship, the best contacts and is willing to put the money in will probably do it.”

Both Manchester giants have already been pretty busy in ththe market so far this summer.

Pep Guardiola has booted City’s squad with the signings of Kyle Walker, Bernardo Silva, Douglas Silva, and Ederson.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils have only made two signings this summer; Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof and the duo made their debuts in the pre-season win over LA Galaxy in the early hours of Sunday morning.

But Neville thinks all of the big clubs will need further recruitment before the season kickoff.
He added: “United need to strengthen, but they all do – quite a bit.”

“Even the champions need to if they’re to repeat what they did last season. You’re not just talking about winning the Premier League title, you’re talking about competing in Europe.

“English clubs have been well short in the last few seasons. All big clubs want to be winning Champions Leagues.

“That won’t happen unless they significantly improve. United need to sign four or five players.”
