Manchester United promising youngster Joe Riley, who has been on long-time loan with Sheffield United since January will return to Old Trafford for treatment on a “freak” injury that stumbled him whilst training with the Blades.

The Red Devils academy graduate had greatly impressed first-team manager Chris Wilder during his short time at Bramall Lane. On February 11, he earned his first appearance for Sheffield off the bench against Petersborough while making his first start three days later against Bristol Rovers.

Wilder’s side currently sits atop the EFL League One table, confirmed that Riley suffered a dislocated shoulder while at training and added that per BBC Radio Sheffield:

“It’s not looking good for him in the short term”

“It was a bit of a freak accident in training, something out of nothing.

“He stumbled and dislocated his shoulder.”

Riley, 20, had previously feature for United from off of the bench in our FA Cup game away to Shrewsbury last February and registered his first start in professional football when we took on FC Midtjylland in last season’s Europa League.

Wilder has confirmed that the 20-year-old has returned to Manchester to determine the extend of his injury.

“He has gone for a scan back at Manchester United,” he explained.

“Those results will determine if he’s back with us or if that’s his season done.”

“It is desperately back luck for Joe and ourselves.”
