Eric Dier’s performance against Watford proves he is more suitable for a midfield role

Tottenham Hotspurs

Mauricio Pochettino’s time as the manager at White Hart lane has produced meaningful results as he has managed to raise the competitive spirit in the squad turning them into genuine contenders in the Premier League. They took all three points from their 4-0 triumph over Watford at the weekend. A goal from Dele Alli and a brace from Heung-Min Son sealed their victory. But one player who also scored a goal and whose impact cannot be overlooked was the versatile English star Eric Dier.

The 23-year old have been used outside the midfield more frequently by pochettino, but his partnership with Mousa Dembele produced mind blowing result as he led his side to victory. The likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli have been regarded as the best players in the Spurs Squad this season but here we bring you reasons why Eric Dier, with regards to his display at the weekend, can also be considered among the best at Tottenham.

A versatile player, Dier can play as a midfielder, center back and right back and possess great technique on the ball. In the game with Watford , Dier was responsible for holding the midfield together as the Hornets were unable to get past him to get hold of the ball. His ball possessing skill was great and he took charge of the central park.

With two tackles and two blocks, Dier countered attacks from the opponent and intercepted a goal. He completed 65 of the 71 attempted passes which was the highest from any player.

Pochettino has deployed Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele to the midfield extensively this season, while Dele Alli and Harry kane have been excellent on the attack front. Dier’s performance at the beginning of the season as a part of the back-three was satisfactory but his creativity, and unending energy in the midfield, makes him comparable to the best of the squad.

Dier has played 29 league games this season but only few of them have been in the central park. He has been decent at the back but his performance against the Hornets at White Hart Lane during the weekend goes on to prove he is more productive in the midfield than every other area on the pitch and Pochettino might need to find him a spot there for the remaining part of the season.
