It’s really going to be a make or break season for Luke Shaw at Old Trafford.
The 22-year-old is entering his fourth year with Manchester United but is yet to make the left-back his own.
After showing so much promise at Southampton, the lack of progress he has made since 2015 is exactly why he has been linked with a move away so frequently.
It isn’t all bad, however, the England international has impressed Jose Mourinho while recovering from his most recent injury and will be given another opportunity to make his mark.
Of course, the former Southampton mancertainly hasn’t had much luck with injuries but he is still running out of chances to impress.
Only a few months ago, Mourinho tipped him to become one of the best in the world.
“In practical terms, we have lots of left-backs,” Mourinho said. “It doesn’t look like it but the reality is that Blind, Shaw, Rojo, Darmian are all playing left-back and can play there. They are different players.
“I think the one that should be in the couple of years the best of all – because potentially he should have all the conditions to be the best of all – is Luke Shaw.”
The Portuguese gaffer praise hasn’t stopped United gearing up for his potential exit in 12 months’ time, though, and a few possible replacements are already being lined up.
According to Manchester Evening News, Tottenham’s Danny Rose is particularly a top target for Mourinho and the Red Devils are currently monitoring his situation in case Shaw fails to make a significant improvement.
The Tottenham man has been linked with a switch to United’s arch-rivals Manchester City throughout the summer but recent reports regarding the move has gone cold.
Rose signed a new deal last year but only received a modest pay to rise so United have the financial power to tempt him into agreeing a deal.
Selling the England ace would be a big blow for Mauricio Pochettino, who only sold Kyle Walker last week to Manchester City.
Meanwhile, Celtic’s Kieran Tierney is another full-back being watched by Mourinho, however, Spurs are also monitoring the 20-year-old.
It only brings much pressure on Shaw to come back fully fit and really kick on. There’s only so many more chances Mourinho will give him.
